English version

Spoiler
Thank you for the invitation to this "virtual interview". Of course I'll answer all questions as thouroughly as I can, though I admit that it could happen that a question is understood falsly by me or my answer is reading a bit strange, since english is not my native language.

Citazione1)E-Mule has lost a great amount of users in the last years which have moved to other p2p (torrent firstly). Which are, in your opinion, the causes for that and how is going to be in the future?

Users are fanatic about download-speed. Most of them don't care about the mechanisms working "behind the scenes" and only care about getting their files as fast as possible. That's the reason why some people user leecher mods.
Since torrent normally provides better download-speeds this is an attractive alternative to other P2P-apps i.e. eMule. Additionally new releases and files are available on torrent first before they get released to ed2k or other P2P-nets.
And generally users in some countries are frightened about using P2P any longer since the content industry is logging P2P-networks and sometimes some users down-/uploading copyrighted material get sued for copyright infringement. That's why not all users are switching to other P2P-networks, but some just quit using P2P completly or are using filehosters like rapidshare because they cannot be caught downloading copyrighted stuff.
For the future I don't predict the apocalypse of our beloved eMule   eMule's main power is the file diversity it provides. Many torrents are dead after only some weeks. On the contrary in eMule you often even get for files some years old full sources. Users seeking variety of files and rare files will keep using eMule while those who only want the newest stuff as fast as possible will switch using torrent or direct-download.

Citazione2)The MOD are certainly fuller of functions in confront of the official version. However, these are still a marginal aspect of eMule. How come?

How come?
There are many reasons for that, not at last the high qualitiy and amount of features and extras the official version itself already has.
Important mod-features get integrated from time to time, last time happened with UPnP which was around in mods for a long time since then. Or the protocol obfuscation which was (in another implementation) first built into the NeoMule and got adopted very fast.
Another aspect is the fact that most users are normal filesharers without the need for further features. The official eMule is all they need and probably all they want, too, since it is easy to use and doesn't confuses with too many options in the preferences to get adjusted.
Nevertheless they have many adavantages because of the mod scene, too - I already spoke about adopted features and another point is the code-fixes and optimizations the modders provide. They are usually integrated into official eMule very fast (just look at the changelog and how many modder-names there appear). Additionally for 0.49c there was an alpha-test with the modder-community as testers, able to not only find bugs and point out (possible) issues but to provide valid code-fixes for them, too. Same goes for the open beta-test phase. Usually nearly all of the modder's fixes get included if they are valid.
eMule Mods are for the more "pro"-audience which want and / or need more features and possibilites to fine-tune their client. The people who care more about the network itself and how it works usually tend to want to adjust their client in the one or the other direction   And of course we got the small but important group of releasers, which need some more features then the ones the official eMule provides (e.g. Powershare).
At last there are several mod-features which really shouldn't be in the official eMule since they may be harmful if used in the wrong way (or adjusted in the wrong way).

Citazione3)The MOD scene become more conformed lately, probably because some developers enforce functions of most in vogue's versions up till making their product similar to a kind of collage. This, in your opinion, is a good or bad thing? And why?

It's a bad thing because it makes the mods become more and more similiar while destroying their own identity and / or uniqueness.
But still the modders generally try to keep their mods in the way they prefer, so I don't see too much conformity. The nowadays mods may share many features, but in detail they're often tweaked and / or changed by the modder so that the implementation from mod to mod normally varies a bit. And of course the mix of the features - which are implemented and which not - make the mod unique. It's up to the user to choose the mod which has most of the features he wants and with testing the different mods this can really be fun.

Citazione4)Considering the amount of MOD in circulation at the moment,(as developer) did you ever take account of the hypothesis of grouping together and developing only ¾ of MOD making all of them different from each other, but in the same time enclosing all the various current features and other innovations?

Well, as it already was Mister Spock's philosophy in good old Star Trek: Infinite Diversity In Infinite Combinations
Besides the fact that sth. like this (coding together a "base mod" and just adjusting small tweaks) wouldn't be possible, it would destroy many important and interesting things.
There are some "basic mods" which are very good suited or even prepared to be used as base for future mods - i.e. WiZaRd's Tombstone, netF's ESE (discontinued), taz' "mod generator", my "OfFixed" and so on). But as already stated above (@ question 3) features and fixes / optimizations may be coded or implemented in different ways and by comparing this there sometimes a new idea is born.
The ClientAnalyzer is for example implemented in a different way in the Spike2-Mod than in most other CA-mods and as another example there are two completly different PowerShare- and PayBackFirst-implementations.
But all of this is completly hypothetical since a project like this wouldn't be possible because of very different approaches and philosophies on some issues the modders have. The problem how to deal with leechers is an example for that.

Citazione5)Do you think that would be a good idea to leave the Server and concentrate all the attention to Kademlia to educate this part of users or it's better, according to you, to wait for a more appropriate moment and permit them to get closer gradually?

Most nowadays servers are non-functional in one way or the other (not indexing, logging, completly fake, etc.), so I think it's really time to move away from the servers and drop supporting them. If it was on me the server support would have been removed in last version.
On the other hand keeping the code-parts needed for server-support doesn't hurt us either. This could be important for the users who really need to use servers because they can't use Kad (because of a crappy router for example). The users wanting server-support for big LANs (e.g. at LAN-partys for distributing game patches) may be pointed at using a mod with LANcast-feature.
My suggestion would be to change the default preferences in the next one or two eMule-versions: server-support disabled by default, Kad enabled by default. Next step after this one or two versions would be the complete removal of server support. But I think the sooner the server support becomes removed, the better !

Citazione6)Which are the strengths and news of your MOD/MODS?

My main mod is the "Spike2-Mod" and although the last released version is based on 0.48a the project is not dead and the next version 0.49c is already running in beta state. It was the first mod with enhanced client-emulations and shareaza-/lphant-emulation and it was the mod in which the ECR (Enhanced Client Recognition) was introduced. This feature is merged into nearly all mods nowadays and replaces cryptic "eMule Compat."-readings with the correct client-name and its version. It's able to correctly identify eMulePlus, Hydranode and TrustyFiles and optimizes recognition of other client types as well. Additionally the Spike2-Mod is the only mod incorporating both philosophies of AntiLeech-matters: You can choose between the ClientAnalyzer and DLP-alike mechanism. In the next version you will be able to use both of them together ! And the Spike2-Mod is the only mod which allows you to switch between Official FullChunk-Transfer, VQB's FullChunk-Transfer or no FullChunk-Transfer - and that even during running upload sessions. I tried to pick the best features to both optimize your upload- and your download-behaviour.

My second mod is the "OfFixed"-mod. The name is a pun with merging the words "offi" (for *official* eMule) and "fixed" together, because it basically just is an official eMule with all bugfixes which became known after release.
This mod is thought for being used as replacement for official eMule, when a user wants to have all the bugfixes and code improvements from the mods, but are happy with the official client and don't need additional features. It looks exactly like official eMule and its preferences are nearly identical. Everyone using the official eMule may use this one, too - without having to re-learn anything.

Its source may be useful as a base for new mods, because there are nearly no new features but only fixes, optimizations and similiar.
As user you won't notice many differences from the official eMule client - if any at all. Most changes are "under the hood" and are there
to improve the security, eliminate possible crashes or memleaks, to reduce CPU-load or to make using more comfortable.
A new version will be available when there are new fixes / optimizations developed or when a new eMule version is released.

Citazione7)How did your passion for development of E-mule start and how long have you been practicing this interest?

I was a normal eMule-user, but as my experience and knowledge about eMule grew I got my own wishes about which features I wanted to have. I found the combination I wanted in eMule 0.44c iONiX 3.45. But the update to iONiX 4 had to much features I didn't needed so I kept using 3.47. I wanted only some small changes in it and so I just did them :) It even was released as the iONiX-AxxeEdition. As I began learning C++ and gained more experiences with modding eMule I started my own mod - the Spike2-mod, which is still being actively developed till now. It all began back in 2004 (if I remember correctly).

Citazione8)Many users complaint about too many fakes and porno films. Do you agree with us that trying to completely embank this problem should be a priority?

"The internet is for porn ... why do you think the net was born ? Porn, porn, porn!" Okay, this one's from the well known fun song from the net   Okay fake-files are a problem but one that can't really be resolved. How should eMule know the content of a file ? How should it judge if a file contains the content the user wants or not ?
But you can really do something against this problem: Try to get your download links from a varified link database, e.g. the eMule Content Database located on the official eMule-Website. Furthermore you should avoid having fake servers in your server list (when using the server search) and you should carefully watch for file comments. They became implemented in eMule to allow users to mark files as faked.

Additionally some mods contain netF's "FakeALyzer" which checks the file meta data to try to detect fakes (works very well). Files which are most likely NOT fake are marked green in your search results and probable fake files are marked red. Other features - TK4's FileNameDisparityCheck - might help, too.

Citazione9)Seeing that the pedopornography flooding on internet and various p2p, wouldn't be advisable to create a function, in eMule, able to point out that kind of files to the competent authorities or to specific websites which collect such signalling like www.stop-it.org? This would be an innovation for eMule and maybe also an example for other p2p to which hark back to.

I'm completly against sth. like that.
Every step into censorship is a very bad one. Please don't misunderstand me here - I don't want to defend child porn, I rather think it should be fighted with the hardest measures the laws provide !!
But if we implement a feature which has the possibility to censor and / or report some files it may become (mis-)used in the future for filtering other contents, too. After child porn perhaps terrorism related contents, then exteme political opinions, then misliked political opinions, and so on. And false positives of course, too !
I'm really convinced that the importance of fighting child pornography cannot be stressed enough, but not by building an infrastructure which allows censorship.
Just filtering child porn files just isn't enough and doesn't really fights child porn and it does not prevent child pornography being produced. That's why german anti-child-abuse organisations protested against the "Stop"-sign in the internet which was planned by the german government. They (the victims themselves!!) claim that this just coveres, but not solves the problem.
Another problem which would arrive is the definition of child porn. The laws in the different countries are very indifferent in this. This really is a difficult question. Sexual activities with underaged persons clearly are child porn, but it becomes difficult when we have contents showing nude underaged persons (without any sexual activities).
Example: In Germany not every photography of a nude child is child-porn. If it's just a picture of a nude kid WITHOUT any sexual activities and WITHOUT the picture obviously being just about the genitals - THEN it's not child porn. On the contrary a picture showing an adult actress/actor which was clearly made to look like child porn may be considered as pedopornography - although it's showing an adult person !
In other countries with different laws there was a case when a 17year old girl sent an MMS with a nude picture of herself to her 19 aged boyfriend. He was sued and put to prison for owning child porn and she was sent to youth prison for producing child porn ! (I think this happened in the US.) What if she wouldn't have used MMS but eMule to transfer this file instead ?
!!!!
I think the best thing to do if you stumble across child porn in eMule is to look at the source details and noting the client's unique client-hash. Note the user-name, the file name, date and time and all other informations which may become important too and report the case to the police / the responsible authorities immediatly (and if you are concerned about being suspected to have searched for this files then there often websites where you can report such cases anonymiously to the police). Please take action and don't just delete the file and forget the case. PERHAPS IT IS ** YOUR ** REPORT TO THE POLICE WHICH LEADS TO A CHILD ABUSER BEING CAUGHT !! PLEASE CARE, PLEASE TAKE ACTION!
!!!!
One of the various other problems with this: What if some bad people start an attack on the network with renaming one file after another to a file name indicating child porn ? eMule would eventually filter them (although it's just a harmless eBook with cooking recipes) and many people would click on the "report!" button ... this could lead to the police getting flooded with reports about harmless files and after some timte the police might not take this reports seriously anymore.

So the behaviour I suggested above for the case of finding such sick files seems the better one to me.

Come mai?

Come mai?
